Give us an elevator pitch of your show.
"Grow" talks about Amish sisters and marijuana; it's absolutely hilarious and stars exceptional performers.
The premise is the following: twin Amish sisters Hannah and Ruth head out on Rumspringa (the period some Amish teenagers take before committing to the church) and end up in the big city for the first time, crossing paths with a cannabis dispensary owner. Turns out they have an extraordinary green thumb, and things spiral from there in the best possible way.
What is your favourite part of this production?
The closing song, Wherever You Go I Will Go, is truly unforgettable; it sends chills down your spine, makes you tear up, and serves as the emotional high point of the show. It beautifully captures the characters’ coming-of-age moment, bringing their journey to a heartfelt and wholesome peak.
Why is this show important for audiences to see right now?
In a world so focused on labeling who we are and claiming ownership over our identity, this show gently challenges us to reflect on what freedom and independence truly mean. It reminds us how vital it is to find your people, your community, especially when the noise around us makes it easy to confuse external expectations with our own desires—what we think we should like, what we think should make us happy.
In reality, we’re often still discovering what genuinely resonates within us. The show beautifully captures that tension, while celebrating the growth, vulnerability, and quiet beauty found in navigating those uncertainties, and ultimately, in learning who you are along the way.
Do you have any other pieces or artists that have inspired you or have left inspiration on this production?
Michael Rubinoff! The producer of the musical, who also produced the international hit "Come From Away", has chosen the Segal Centre as his main base to develop the show and we could not be more excited. We have high hopes that "Grow" will follow the same trajectory as his other work and land in Broadway.
How has the current social or political climate influenced this production?
The show is sharp, witty, and packed with pop culture references that speak directly to the realities many young adults in the West are navigating today. It’s incredibly easy for a younger audience to connect with: it feels current, honest, and familiar in all the right ways.
And yes, Timothée Chalamet—performing arts is still ALL THAT.
How does this production align with your company’s mission or artistic vision?
The Segal Centre strives to be a driving force in shaping the national stage, and champions original work that opens new creative horizons. "Grow" is the newest expression of that commitment.
The show was developed in part through the Centre's Stage Forward Fund. It is a reflection of our eagerness to be at the forefront of theatrical innovation, nurturing the stories and artists who will define Canadian theatre's next chapter.
