Give us an elevator pitch of your show.
Max and Aaron Write a Musical is an original queer romcom musical within a musical wrapped up in a love letter to Montreal that celebrates creativity, community and finding your voice. This world premiere is presented in English with additional French text and bilingual surtitles.
Why is this play important for audiences to see right now?
Because it’s joyful, honest, and queer—and we need more stories that celebrate queer connection and conflict without tragedy. It’s also about making something together in a world that keeps telling you not to, which feels incredibly current.
Do you have any other pieces or artists that have inspired you or have left inspiration on this production?
We’ve drawn inspiration from the meta-theatrical charm of [title of show], the emotional layering of Sondheim, the intimacy of Jonathan Larson, and the energy of Gen Z creators. It’s a love letter to musical theatre and the people who make it.
How has the current social or political climate influenced this production?
The show reflects the tension between artistic ambition and survival in a city where funding is scarce, rents are high, and language politics are loud. But it also offers a bilingual, queer-positive space to imagine something more hopeful.
What has been this production’s greatest challenge?
Honestly? Doing it anyway. With little public funding, we've relied on community, in-kind support, and our own resilience to bring it to life. But it’s also made the process more collaborative and more meaningful.
How does this production align with your company’s mission or artistic vision?
It’s deeply rooted in what I am most interested in: queer stories, bilingual storytelling, metatheatrical play, and community-driven practice. It’s bold, heart-first theatre that doesn’t take itself too seriously—until it suddenly does.
BONUS QUESTION: Which character in the show would you most want to grab a drink with?
Jesse. I feel like if there's anyone who knows how to party, it's Jesse.
