QDF Workshops 2024-2025

Basics of Intimacy Directing

with Meagan Schroeder

In this 3-hour introductory workshop on Intimacy Basics, we delve into the core elements of consent within creative environments. Through self-reflection and community engagement, we lay the groundwork for understanding and practicing consent in artistic settings. Participants will engage in embodied exercises and/or active witnessing to develop skills in setting and respecting personal boundaries, as well as negotiating boundaries with collaborators. The workshop with Schroeder emphasizes a playful approach to learning, recognizing that creativity thrives in a mindful and playful environment. We integrate these foundational tools into guided storytelling activities, focusing on basic touch gestures, effective communication strategies, and community-oriented methods. By the end of the workshop, students will gain a deeper understanding of their own agency and comfort levels in navigating intimacy within theatrical contexts.

We encourage theatre practitioners of all kinds to take this workshop, including but not limited to actors, directors, designers and stage managers. This workshop will be curated to try to ensure we have participants from a diversity of disciplines for a more layered look at creation and collaboration.

about the facilitator

Meagan Schroeder

Meagan (she/her) is a queer Intimacy Coordinator, Intimacy Director, Educator and Actor based in Tio'tia: ke (Montreal, QC).

Meagan’s training comes from an evolution of her experience as an actor. Having her BFA in theatre performance from Concordia University has given Meagan embodied knowledge in the dramaturgy of movement and expression of the human body. Having worked as an actor in film, TV, voice and theatre for 10+ years she understands the range of personal creative processes actors use to approach their craft and work mindfully with impulses. Meagan believes that story-telling should be sensorial and enjoys creating from a place of curiosity, play and collaboration.

Her personal and professional curiosities about the intersection of sexuality and mental health brought her to the Institute of Somatic Sexology where she completed her Embodied Counseling Certificate. From here she deepend her training with Mental Health First Aid for Adult and Youth with the Mental Health Commission of Canada. She is a confident and grounded presence in the face of conflict management and overstimulating environments.

Meagan is always eager to learn; therefore she intentionally sought out her training as an Intimacy Coordinator + Intimacy Director from as many institutions and people as possible to diversify her knowledge and approach. She has learned from her incredible mentors and teachers here at PIP and beyond with Theatrical Intimacy Education, Intimacy Directors and Coordinators, Intimacy Directors of Colour and The National Society of Intimacy Professionals
